Thanksgiving benefits, concerts highlight the week

Retail stores and radio stations may be pushing the Christmas countdown, but Thanksgiving is still around the corner, and South Mississippi is offering several events this week to raise donations for local food pantries that serve the less fortunate on Thanksgiving Day.

Join the 67th annual Harvest Dinner in Bay St. Louis from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church for a traditional Thanksgiving meal with sides, casseroles and desserts. Take-out meals will be available from 4-8 p.m., but dine-in seating begins at 5 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Alliance for Health, the Hancock County Food Pantry and Friends of the Animal Shelter. Tickets may be purchased in advance at 126 Main Street or at the door. Cost: $10.

The 13th annual Piney Woods Heritage Festival will celebrate traditional skills such as blacksmithing, quilting, wood carving and more from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Crosby Arboretum, 370 Ridge Road, Picayune. Don't miss the live music, local crafts and silent auction. Cost: $5 adults, $2 children. Details: 601-799-2311.

Run for a cause and help raise donations for local food pantries during the sixth annual Gobble Wobble Food Drive & Bridge Run from 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday on the Ocean Springs side of the Biloxi Bay Bridge. Participants are encouraged to dress in Thanksgiving-related costumes, and the run is open to ages 12 and older. Entry cost: $10 donation or 10 nonperishable food items. In preparation for the holidays, the proceeds will benefit The Lord is My Help soup kitchen and food pantry in Ocean Springs. Details: 219-2238.
