Though coastal communities have been celebrating for most of October, Halloween finally arrives this week, and all of South Mississippi's ghouls, ghosts and goblins are coming out to enjoy a variety of frightening festivities.

While cemetery tours, trunk-or-treat events and Halloween parties pepper the early part of the week, the much-anticipated 5K Zombie Run at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will wake the dead with participants running, walking or slowly staggering through the 5K course at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Perkinston campus. Get in character for the run and the costume contest by donning your scariest zombie makeup, ripped jeans and a little fake blood before joining the horde to race for the win. Cost: $20 advanced registration, $25 same-day registration. Proceeds benefit the MGCCC Student Scholarship Fund, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation and local families in need during the holiday season. Details/registration: mgccc.edu/zombierun.
