Wait — is Chipotle coming to Gulfport?

I gasped three times when I saw a few friends post to Facebook on Wednesday that Chipotle Mexican Grill was opening in Gulfport.

Is this real? Am I asleep? Are my basic dreams coming true?

Well, I had to slow my grilled steak burrito roll really fast as I watched my dreams crumble before my eyes, much like the crumbs at the bottom of a bag of tortilla chips. As it turns out, the “Chipotle” location is actually going to be a Backyard Burgers.

The confusion came because the restaurant is designed with a modern flair, and it does resemble some standalone Chipotle venues. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good hamburger, too.

Also, all hope for Chipotle is not totally lost. The restaurant chain is soon coming to Slidell, which is only a 35-minute drive from Gulfport. It’s scheduled to open in early 2017.
