You're not alone: Miss Mississippi USA 2012 uses Instagram to reveal she was raped

5. 17. 19. 23. Those were the ages when 2012 Miss Mississippi USA was raped or sexually assaulted.

Paromita Mitra, who made history two years ago when she became the first Bangladeshi Miss Mississippi USA titleholder, shared her story via Instagram on Thursday.

“This has been my deepest darkest secret for my entire life. There are only a few people that know about this but I’ve finally decided to share it with you all. This is my story. I do not want this to define me now or ever again,” Mitra posted on Instagram.

Mitra shared her experience, she wrote, to continue the battle against violence and rape culture.

“We need to continue the movement,” she said. “Rise above the hate and make something better for your situation. This is NOT your burden.”

Mitra’s actions speak just as a loud as her words. She is an activist against rape culture, and sharing her story with the world will undoubtedly encourage others to do the same.

Mitra’s shirt symbolizes heartache and pain, but also shows the power we have to fight against rape culture and spread the word to society. A picture can speak thousands of words.
