The streets of downtown Pascagoula will go to the dogs Friday for a good cause — to celebrate pets and encourage pet adoptions.
From 5-8 p.m., downtown will be home to Third Fridays: Dog Days of Summer. The city-hosted event is being held for the first time to offer a fun reason for families to come downtown and is doing it this month with a pet theme. The event will include live music, art, animals and more.
Jen Dearman, director of community and economic development for Pascagoula, said the city-sponsored event was created to stimulate downtown Pascagoula’s nightlife.
“A lot of people choose to go out of town for entertainment or restaurants,” Dearman said. “We have a great little downtown that is active on Friday nights and we think it’s a great place for families and young professional and retirees — all of the above.”
The pet theme will place the limelight on adoptable animals who are looking for homes. The pets will be presented by the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Also, Our Lady of Victories will conduct a blessing of the pets at 5:30 p.m. and a pet parade will march down Delmas Avenue at 6:30 p.m.
Artist Marguerite Pivarnik will offer free water color sessions at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. with each class limited to the first 10 participants on a first-come first-served basis. The course will help painters create a watercolor of a dog staring at the moon.
The pet theme continues throughout the family-friendly event with Copycats face painting and a story time at Whimsy Books and Toys. Other children’s attractions include the ever-popular bounce house and miniature fire truck rides.
Booths at the event will offer information on community activities and will include local artists. Local businesses will offer specials and sales throughout the event.
Amanda Jones & Friends will play live music on stage at the corner of Magnolia and Delmas. Over at Anchor Square, there also will be popular music provided by The Boogie Van.
Admission to the event is free.
