Short reviews of video presentations
There are a lot of video presentations here, so it's time for a column of short reviews to perhaps guide your gift-giving. And away we go!
'Wheels Up Tour,' Lady Antebellum (Eagle Rock Entertainment, HHHH 1/2)
This Nov. 13 DVD/Blu-Ray/digital release filmed at Irvine Meadows is perfect for fans of this harmony-centered modern country band. The staging is spectacular, the musicianship and singing are excellent and the hits are numerous ("Need You Now," "Bartender," "Downtown," "American Honey" and more). My favorite part is an acoustic segment beginning with Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud."
'Forbidden Zone,' Directed by Richard Elfman (MVDvisual/MVDaudio, HH)
This parental advisory DVD/Blu-Ray/Soundtrack CD Sept. 29 release stars Herve Villechaize (Fantasy Island) and unfamiliar-to-me actors with lots of bonus features, including a behind-the-scenes documentary. The music is not bad if you enjoy American songbook-type numbers with sophomoric lyrics.
This movie that would make a medium-quality music video or skit.
'Rebel Scum: The True, Twisted Story of a Southern Punk Band,' (MVDvisual, HHH)
This Parental Advisory Nov. 24 DVD tells the story of two years in the life of Knoxville punk band The Dirty Works, centering on tormented, substance-abusing front man Christopher Scum and his hard drinking band mates. This gripping documentary shows a tremendous waste of talent with slight hope for the future.
'I Need A Dodge! Joe Strummer On The Run,' Nick Hall (MVDvisual, HHHH)
This interesting DVD documentary by Hall shows what happens after a 1997 post-Clash
radio interview with Joe Strummer when he mentions buying a Dodge 12 years earlier in Madrid and asks radio listeners to look for the car.
The Dodge quest is one element of a quixotic film that interviews Spanish post-punkers, Clash Mk II members and lots more.
Extras: postcard-size adverts for the film, an audio cassette and additional interviews.
'Slowhand at 70-Live at The Royal Albert Hall,' Eric Clapton (Eagle Rock Entertainment, HHHH 1/2)
This Nov. 13 Blu-Ray + 2CD/DVD + 2CD/Deluxe 2DVD box/digital release recently aired in part during Mississippi PBS's winter pledge drive. The film and discs document Clapton's 200th show at his favorite venue right after his 70th birthday.
The Deluxe Edition contains both the DVD & 2CDs reviewed here; and adds a DVD of past performances (including Cream's 1968 Farewell Tour) and a nifty photo book.
This is a great show featuring Eric's most-recent A-list band. My favorite songs are "Tell The Truth," "Hoochie Coochie Man" and an acoustic-beginning segment that builds from "Driftin' Blues" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out."
Clapton fans will dig this one.
