PASCAGOULA -- The Jackson County Fair kicks off Sunday and runs through Oct. 25 in what is billed as the county's "best week of the year," featuring eight days of spinning rides, stockyard exhibits, live entertainment and seafood gumbo.

The fair will be held at Shortcut and Hospital roads in Pascagoula, and free parking will be available in the north parking lot along Shortcut Road and along Vega Street, south of the fairground.

Ride tickets start at $1 and rides average four tickets per ride but vary, and tickets are good for the week. Special armband tickets will be available for $20 during Midnight Madness starting at 11 p.m. until 2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and again from 12:30 to 5 p.m. and 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25.

Live entertainment, including music and dance groups, a talent show and dog show, will be in the indoor Civic Center stage and at the Barn.

The Livestock Barn and Commercial Booths in the Civic Center will open at 9 a.m. Monday.

Rides will be open at 4 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday and earlier throughout the weekend.

Jackson County residents age 70 and older are invited to the Old Settler's Day Lunch at the fair on Thursday. Lunch tickets can be picked up from 9 to 11 a.m. at a tent in front of the Arts Building that day. (Because of work being done at the Armory, there will not be a presentation this year.)

Along with midway food vendors, the food booth pavilion at the northwest corner of the fairgrounds houses 10 individual food booths and room for hundreds to dine comfortably under a single covered facility no matter what the weather is like.

The food booths will be hosted this year by Caswell Springs United Methodist Church, Faith in the Word Ministries, Old Faith Bible Study, Liberty Assembly of God Church, Parkway Baptist Church, Safe Harbor United Methodist Church, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Solomon Temple Zion Church, Pascagoula Police Benefit Fund and Asbury Chapel AME Zion Church.
