Mark Rosewater Announces Mood Swings TCG, A New Emotion-Themed Trading Card Game

Mark Rosewater has officially announced Mood Swings, a new trading card game project nearly three decades in the making.

Originally conceived around 28 years ago, Mood Swings is designed as a more accessible alternative to traditional trading card games like Magic: The Gathering. Rosewater describes it as a simpler, faster experience that still captures the core appeal of the genre, including card interactions, adaptability, and collectibility.

What Is Mood Swings?

Mood Swings is a light strategy trading card game built for two to four players. Each game is designed to be quick and easy to pick up, with matches typically lasting between five and ten minutes.

The game is sold as a complete boxed product. Each box contains 45 randomized cards, allowing players to start playing immediately without any deck building. While it removes the traditional setup barrier, it still preserves the variability that defines the TCG experience.

How Mood Swings Keeps the TCG Identity

Despite its simplified structure, Mood Swings retains the "bigger than the box" philosophy often associated with trading card games, a concept popularized by Richard Garfield. Each box pulls from a larger pool of 133 total cards, meaning no two sets are exactly the same.

Each 45-card set includes a mix of 23 commons, 14 uncommons, six rares, and two mythic rares. Across the full pool, the game features 48 commons, 40 uncommons, 30 rares, and 15 mythic rares.

Theme and Design Approach

Mood Swings uses the five-color system familiar to fans of Magic: The Gathering. Each card represents a specific emotion or mood, with artwork drawn from sketch versions of previously published Magic art.

Rosewater describes the project as his "love letter" to trading card games, combining the depth and collectibility of the genre with the accessibility of a traditional card game that can be played straight out of the box.

Release Date and Availability

Mood Swings will be available starting June one through MagicSecretLair.com. Rosewater also confirmed that more details will be shared during MagicCon: Las Vegas, where the game will be further showcased.
