Blake Shelton Felt Destined to Record His Unforgettable 2011 No. 1 Country Love Classic
Some songs feel like they arrive at exactly the right moment, and for Blake Shelton, this 2011 hit is one he believes was nothing short of destiny.
"God Gave Me You" quickly became one of Shelton's most memorable love songs and a standout on the country charts. Over time, it has taken on a deeper meaning for both the artist and fans, who continue to connect with its heartfelt message of gratitude and love.
The song was initially written and recorded by Dave Barnes. He initially released the song one year prior, and it was included on his LP What We Want, What We Get.
Shelton told The Boot that he first heard Barnes's song on the radio and was inspired to record it. "I was flipping through stations and landed on a contemporary Christian station, and that song came on, and I almost had to pull the truck over. I felt like I was hearing that song at that moment for a reason."

Barnes said the song came "randomly" and he based it around its guitar line and hook, reported The Boot. "The title came to me on a trip to London, randomly enough, so I just added the music," he explained.

The songwriter was grateful that Shelton came across his song at exactly the right moment, and that he was inspired to record it. He said, "The fact that he heard it on the radio and wanted to record it because it meant something to him blows my mind. It's still hard to believe it's on the radio."
Barnes added, "Writing so much on Music Row and knowing the process of how songs get cut and picked for radio, it's amazing to me that 'God Gave Me You' made it through the whole process. I'm so thankful!"

In 2010, Billboard said of Barnes' version, "It sounds like a big old pop hit. Everyone loves a love song, and 'God Gave Me You' has the potential to become a wedding staple for decades to come."
Shelton recorded the song for his LP Red River Blue. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart in October 2011 and remained at that position for three weeks.
"God Gave Me You" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012.
