Everyone is Irish this weekend, as two St. Patrick’s Day parades roll in South Mississippi.
Beads will fly from floats Saturday in Ocean Springs and Pascagoula, and it’s likely heads of fresh cabbage will be tossed to the crowd in the spirit of the Irish celebration.
It’s possible to attend both parades, since the Ocean Springs parade is in the early afternoon and Pascagoula’s is at night.
Ocean Springs festivities
The parade starts at 1 p.m. in Ocean Springs and follows the Mardi Gras parade route from the Front Beach, up Porter Avenue and through the downtown on Washington and Government streets.
The Hibernia Society moved the parade to Ocean Springs this year and the Colleen and grand marshal will lead the floats and local bands.
The Ocean Springs Chamber–Main Street and business owners will make it a full day of St. Patrick’s Day fun. Starting at 10 a.m., shops and restaurants through the downtown will offer themed specials and promotions. After the parade, bars will start their specials at 4 p.m. and revelers will keep the party going along the streets of downtown.
“From shopping and dining to the excitement of the parade, it’s a fun and festive way to spend the day in Ocean Springs,” says Cynthia Sutton, president of the Ocean Springs Chamber-Main Street.
Pascagoula’s parade
An all day shop and bar crawl will bring people to downtown Pascagoula on Saturday for the Pascagoula Main Street salute to Irish culture.
Live music from 4-7 p.m. will warm up the crowds.
The parade rolls at 7:30 p.m., starting on Krebs Avenue to Magnolia Street to Watts Avenue to Pascagoula Street.
