Will Jimmy Kimmel appear on South MS televisions tonight? Here’s what we know
WLOX-TV and other stations owned by Gray Media are expected to broadcast Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show when it returns to ABC on Tuesday.
ABC and two companies that own local television stations across the country decided last week to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after pressure over the host’s remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing.
ABC said it would reinstate the show this week. Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, which together own about 70 ABC stations across the country, are still refusing to air the program.
Gray Media, which owns WLOX, has not indicated objection to airing the show. The New York Times reported Tuesday that Gray and Hearst, which also owns ABC affiliate stations, are planning to run the program. A WLOX programming schedule also shows Kimmel’s show is scheduled to air on WLOX at 10:30 p.m.
Representatives at WLOX and Gray Media did not return messages. A story on wlox.com about Kimmel being reinstated did not indicate whether the local station would broadcast the show.
ABC, Nexstar and Sinclair suspended the show after Kimmel addressed Kirk’s killing in a monologue Sept. 15. Kimmel said Trump and his supporters were “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
The decisions to pull Kimmel off the air came after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr condemned the host’s remarks as inaccurate and warned they could lead to consequences. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the F.C.C. ahead,” he said.
The action sparked a tense debate about freedom of speech. Many conservatives praised the show’s suspension, and others, including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, warned that threatening to retaliate against media companies for what they broadcast set a dangerous precedent.
Nexstar is also trying to secure a merger with another TV station owner, Tegna, that needs FCC approval.
The companies do not own stations on the Mississippi Coast. The nearest Nexstar-owned stations are WHLT 22, a CBS affiliate that serves Hattiesburg, and WGNO-TV in New Orleans.
