There’s no sitting still for Englebert Humperdinck. At 81, the “king of romance” still performs several concert dates a year and in late 2017, he released his latest album, “The Man I Want to Be.”
He will return to the Coast for two shows at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino on Friday and Saturday. Tickets start at $24 and are avaialable at Ticketmaster.com.
The album finds Humperdinck in familiar territory with new versions of standards such as Willie Nelson’s “Crazy” and Eddy Arnold’s “Welcome to My World.” He also takes some risks breathing new life into Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” and Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph.”
“This album is dedicated to my wife (Patricia Healey),” Humperdinck said in an interview with the Sun Herald. “She’s battling Alzheimers and there are some songs that we did for her, including ‘I’m Glad I Danced With You,’ which I wrote with my daughter and recorded with my granddaughter, she’s the silent voice of my wife and she’s an amazing singer and I’m very proud of her.”
Although Humperdinck is using music to help both himself and his wife and she continues to fight the debilitating disease, he said he also finds comfort in more traditional ways as well.
“I’m a Catholic and I belive in praying,” he said. I want people to know about my wife’s condition and fight with Alzheimer’s because I want people to pray for her. Prayer is a very powerful thing and when more people are praying for someone, the prayer chain gets stronger. We should never think that it’s just lost words in the air.”
