It turns out Ole Miss' 10-7 loss at LSU didn't do that much damage in the eyes of the College Football Playoff selection committee.
The committee released its first rankings on Tuesday, and the top 10 are:
1. Mississippi State
2. Florida State
Never miss a local story.
4. Ole Miss
8. Michigan State
9. Kansas State
10. Notre Dame
These rankings keep open the possibility of Ole Miss (7-1, 4-1) and MSU (7-0, 4-0) both making it into the four-team College Football Playoff.
The only clear path to having two Mississippi teams in the playoff is that both Ole Miss and MSU win out and that the Rebels win the Egg Bowl in Oxford, and then take the SEC title.
In that case, there's a good possibility that both MSU and Ole Miss make the CFP.
However, Ole Miss and MSU face difficult weeks ahead.
The Bulldogs have to go to No. 6 Alabama on Nov. 15 and Ole Miss hosts No. 3 Auburn at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
