Southern Miss football fans in South Mississippi will have a chance to watch six of the team’s games this season on WXXV’s NBC and FOX affiliates, the station’s general manager, Bobby Edwards, said Wednesday.
WXXV, which has a studio in Gulfport, recently acquired the rights to broadcast the games through the Sinclair Broadcast Group. WXXV is based in the Biloxi-Gulfport area, but it has a transmitter located in McHenry in Stone County, and the station’s over the air broadcast is available as far north as Hattiesburg.
Sinclair recently announced that it is launching the American Sports Network, which has TV deals with Conference USA, the Big South Conference, Southern Conference and Patriot League.
ASN games will be shown on Sinclair stations, such as WPMI-NBC in Mobile, Ala., and syndication of the games allowed WXXV to acquire the broadcast rights.
The first USM game set to be shown by WXXV will be the home game against Appalachian State at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 on the station’s NBC affiliate.
With ESPN no longer syndicating SEC games to local stations because of the launch of the new SEC Network in August, WXXV and other stations have a college football void to fill.
“We didn’t have a way of carrying a local university on the air,” Edwards said. “We’ve looked into carrying Southern Miss games for several years. They had games being broadcast, but not in our local market. Now, we’ll have six of the USM games.
“It’s going to be exciting. Things are building up for a new season. The important thing is it gives alumni and fans of USM a chance to watch games locally.”
Edwards said Friday that he hasn’t found out yet who the commentators will be for games.
