The search to replace Donnie Tyndall at Southern Miss has begun and there should be no shortage of interested candidates for the job.
There are strong indications that Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne is among the group interested in replacing Tyndall. Payne, a native of Laurel, served on the staff at Oregon before joining Kentucky in 2010.
Payne played college basketball at Louisville following an impressive prep career at Northeast Jones.
Sources close to Morehead State head coach Sean Woods say that he is also interested in the USM opening. Woods, a former Mississippi Valley State coach, was one of the top candidates for the Southern Miss opening when Tyndall was hired two years ago.
Woods, a former Kentucky star basketball player, led Morehead State a 20-14 season this year.
Woods and Payne are just two of several names who could be attractive candidates at USM. Other potential candidates include: Eastern Kentucky head coach Jeff Neubauer, Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar, Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood, Iowa State assistant Doc Sadler, Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Bob Marlin and former South Carolina and Western Kentucky coach Darrin Horn.
