The Southern Miss football coaching staff is singing Vancleave native Jerry McCorvey's praises of late, and his chances of starting the Aug. 31 season opener appear to be on the rise.
McCorvey has recently been getting snaps with the first string at the bandit (a defensive end/linebacker hybrid position), and defensive coordinator Dave Duggan has noticed significant improvement from him since the spring.
“He has a chance to compete for the starting job,” Duggan said.
On Friday, head coach Todd Monken singled out McCorvey when talking about players who have stepped up their play during fall camp.
Never miss a local story.
“Jerry McCorvey has done really well,” Monken said.
McCorvey and redshirt senior Octavius Thomas are battling for the top job at the bandit.
McCorvey sat out last year at USM with a redshirt following a standout career at Vancleave under coach Jim Bloomfield.
