A pair of new verbal commitments should bolster the Southern Miss football team's secondary in coming seasons.
Bassfield defensive back Curtis Mikell committed to USM at the conclusion of the team's camp on Saturday after putting up a blazing 4.30-second 40-yard dash in Hattiesburg.
On Monday, Florence (Ala.) defensive back Quade Alexander committed to USM via Twitter.
While Alexander plans to cross state lines to attend college, Mikell is glad to be staying close to home.
Never miss a local story.
“I like Southern Miss because of the coaching staff,” Mikell said Monday. “I've been wanting to go to school there since I was a little boy. I can stay close to home and the coaches me feel like I was wanted.”
Alexander, who stands 6-foot-1, 162 pounds, said on his Twitter account (at)Eraof1: “I'm going to be a Southern Miss Golden Eagle #SMTTT).”
According to GoldenEaglePride.com, Alexander also had scholarship offers from Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane and UAB.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Mikell also received a scholarship offer from UAB.
