The schedule could not have been devised any better for the final week of the regular season in Class 4A.
Undefeated and top-ranked D’Iberville invades fifth-ranked Picayune on Friday to decide the Region 8-4A championship.
The Warriors (9-0) face a Maroon Tide team (7-1) that has won seven in a row since a season-opening 28-14 loss to Moss Point.
Second-ranked Ocean Springs (8-0), coming off a big 38-21 victory over Pascagoula, faces nemesis Gulfport in Milner Stadium on Friday. The Greyhounds and No. 3 George County will square off for the Region 4-5A title on Nov. 9.
Never miss a local story.
D’Iberville is scoring 45.4 points a game while Picayune averages 36.8 points a game.
“This would be one game I’d go to on Friday night if I was a fan,’’ D’Iberville coach Louis Smith said. “We pulled an upset on them in 2001 (a 34-31 overtime playoff win), and I’m sure they haven’t forgotten that.’’
Both teams have set up this climatic matchup with victories. D’Iberville beat Greene County 34-14 while Picayune rolled past Long Beach 47-27.
“We watched the Long Beach film (Monday), and (Albert Richard) looks like he is running at full speed,’’ Smith said. “They are pretty physical up front and, defensively, run to the ball well. With their speed, they can score from anywhere.
“Drew Cole is doing a good job for them. No. 79 (Jon Billups) looks like a D-I prospect. And No. 3 (Chris Nixon) is a good split end. They are one of the most talented groups we will face.’’
D’Iberville running back Mark Seymour has eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark. He currently stands at 1,079 yards with 14 touchdowns.
Fourth-ranked Moss Point (8-1) won the Region 7-4A title last Friday.
Ninth-ranked Bay High (5-4) can wrap up the final playoff spot from Region 8-4A with a win over Long Beach on Friday.
In another notable accomplishment, St. Stanislaus quarterback Dylan Favre holds the school record with 29 touchdown passes. That eclipsed the mark of 28 set by Lance Cuevas.
