Eleven practices into the 2013 fall camp, and the new Southern Miss staff is still trying to find out who will step up and take over at quarterback.
Cole Weeks and Allan Bridgford appear to be the leaders of the group after Saturday's scrimmage.
Weeks completed 9-of-16 passes for 162 yards while Bridgford was 8-of-9 for 77 yards. Ricky Lloyd was 5-of-9 for 49 yards.
Freshman Nick Mullens also appears to be making a case to avoid a redshirt this season after hitting 7-of-8 passes for 61 yards.
Mullens looked very sharp throwing the football early in camp, but it seemed unlikely that he would get the opportunity to make the climb up the depth chart. Following a strong scrimmage, Mullens may have a chance to fight for the job. His practice snaps are on the increase.
Bridgford is arguably the favorite to be starter for the Aug. 31 season opener against Texas State.
He has experience as a Division I quarterback at California, and he appears to be getting better with time. He has suffered no major setbacks in camp.
First-year head coach Todd Monken has been tight-lipped in describing the depth chart at quarterback.
To start camp, he said he wanted to get the quarterback battle down to two men after one week. It doesn't look like that's happened. He also said he wanted to have it down to one man after two weeks. He added, "I hope it's not a battle after that. If it is, we're in trouble."
Monken has been a little irritated with a lack of progress, but coaches are often frustrated entering the third week of fall camp.
