Southern Miss received no damage to its athletic facilities during Sunday's Hattiesburg tornado according to an early assessment, athletic director Jeff Hammond said in an email this morning.
A tornado swept through the heart of Hattiesburg on Sunday, damaging businesses and houses from West Hattiesburg all the way to Petal on the east side of the city. At least a dozen injuries were reported.
The Ogletree House, which houses the USM Alumni Association, was destroyed in the storm and several other buildings on the school's campus were damaged. The jazz building, which is located on Hardy Street, received severe damage.
However, USM's athletic facilities appear to have made it out OK.
"We completed an Athletics Facility assessment last night and will follow-up this morningno damages identified to date," Hammond said in the email sent out just before 9 a.m. today.
Hammond added that USM's coaches have reached out to their counterparts at Oak Grove High School, which received major damage on Sunday.
Hammond said in the email that all USM coaches, athletes and staff members had been accounted for.
Two USM staff members received significant damage to their homes and Hammond said the athletic department was doing what it could to help those affected by the storm.
