The Southern Miss-Mississippi State football rivalry was revived with a Tuesday announcement that the two programs have agreed to a three-game series.
The two teams will meet on Sept. 7, 2019, in a guarantee game for Southern Miss. The amount that USM will receive for the trip to Starkville was not made immediately available.
USM will again travel to Mississippi State for a game on Sept. 23, 2023. The Bulldogs will come to Hattiesburg on Sept. 14, 2024.
“We are pleased to announce this series, which is good for the football fans in the state of Mississippi,” USM athletic director Jon Gilbert said in a press release.
USM and MSU have played football 29 times with the series standing even at 14-14-1.
The two programs played a home-and-home in 2014 and 2015. MSU won 49-0 in Starkville in 2014 and 34-16 in Hattiesburg the next year.
The scheduling of the 2019 game will force the Troy contest back a week to Sept. 14, 2019.
USM will have plenty of SEC opponents on the schedule over the next few years. The Golden Eagles host Kentucky to open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 and go to Tennessee on Nov. 4. The Golden Eagles will travel to Auburn in 2018, Alabama in 2019 and Auburn in 2020.
This is the second major scheduling announcement of Gilbert’s brief tenure. USM has a four-game series against Tulane that will be played in 2022-23 and 2026-27. Tulane hosts USM in 2022 and goes to Hattiesburg in 2023. The same arrangement will take place in 2026 and 2027.
