Heading into the 11th week of the high school football season, one unbeaten team remains in South Mississippi.
And that team is No. 1 in the Sun Herald South Mississippi football rankings.
The Ocean Springs Greyhounds ascended to No. 1 on the wings of a 33-14 victory over Gulfport, one that pushed the Greyhounds to 9-0.
Now the Greyhounds face second-ranked George County (9-1) for the Region 4-5A championship on Friday in Lucedale.
Never miss a local story.
It should be quite a duel. Ocean Springs sports gamebreakers DeAndre Brown (524 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns) and running back T.J. Lawrence (606 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns).
George County counters with quarterback Tookie Hopkins (978 rushing yards, 1,028 passing yards) and all-purpose receiver/defensive back Alonzo Lawrence (800 return yards, 385 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns).
Sixth-ranked Pascagoula (6-2) is the only other 5A team in the South Mississippi rankings. The Panthers face Petal in a game that will help determine whether Biloxi or Petal makes the state playoffs.
Previous No. 1 D’Iberville (9-1) dropped to No. 5 after its 30-21 loss to Picayune in a game that decided the Region 8-4A champion. Picayune (8-1), riding an 8-game win streak, is No. 4 and opens state playoff action Friday at home against Gautier.
Moss Point (9-1) is No. 3 and has won seven in a row. The Tigers entertain Long Beach in opening-round playoff action.
D’Iberville entertains No. 8 Vancleave (6-4) while No. 7 St. Stanislaus (8-2) visits Forrest County AHS in a first-ever football matchup between the two schools. St. Stanislaus’ Brandon Keel set a school single game record with seven catches for 243 yards in a win over Poplarville. Quarterback Dylan Favre is coming off a 355-yard passing performance that gives him 2,680 yards and 33 TDs for the season.
Long Beach and Gautier both enter the Top 10 after qualifying for the state playoffs. The Bearcats rode Brandon Jacobs’ 303-yard, threetouchdown rushing performance to its win over Bay High.
