Leave your dogs

Please, please, please leave your dogs at home and come and enjoy the Peter Anderson Festival.

Look inside

I am worried about the person looking for beautiful churches. If you are only looking on outside, God is looking on the inside. My church is beautiful because it belongs to my God. If you are a child of God, think of what a beautiful place he has promised us. If not, you might find a lot of beautiful buildings. God bless you.

Point of reference

In response to the person who said that lighthouses are used to guide ships in a fog. Wrong. If it’s foggy, how are you going to see the lighthouse? Lighthouses are used as reference points — not to guide you in a fog. (From an old ship pilot.)

Study up

I suspect that the person who wrote in about the lighthouse is either not from the Coast or too young to remember. In the early ’50s there were only two lanes of road on the north side of the light and way back from the turn of the century the lighthouse was at the water’s edge. It was used to guide the schooners that fished the Gulf home and also the many tugs and wartime vessels. Maybe before someone writes in they should do some research or history checks which can be achieved by going to the library.

Good goblins

We had 30 of the most polite, well-mannered, happy trick-or-treaters this year. No smart mouths, destructive, etc., just plain, nice kids of all ages. Thanks to the parents who told them to say thank you, have a nice night, and to appreciate what they got as a handout. If this happened every year there would be more people handing out treats. A lot of folks just close their doors and turn off the lights, or even leave home. It was different this year because of the polite kids.

Thanks for the kindness

This past weekend I went to lunch, which I rarely do, with two other police officers at the Harbor View Cafe in Long Beach. A retired police officer from Detroit, came over to say hello and thanked us for our service. It was a kind gesture and appreciated. After the meal, we were told the bill had been paid by a person wishing to remain anonymous. I don’t know if it was the retired officer or another kind and generous person, but I want to say thank you very much. Later I took my child to Edgewater Mall, to trick or treat. The lady at the Hallmark store saw my U.S. Armed Forces cap and thanked me for my service as she gave my child a piece of candy. That too was unexpected. So I would like to say thank you very much to each of the people who took the time to say thank you to me. The world is a better place because of your generosity and kindness. I did pay it forward.
