There's all kinds of good food in all kinds of South Mississippi kitchens, from the basic to the extravagant. The Sun Herald's food blog features all kinds of recipes, tips and tricks to help you get better in your kitchen and points you to kitchens you might be interested in.
My friends and colleagues, Sharon and John, invited some folks over for dinner and a visit with former staffer Kat Bergeron recently.
More...I like to eat a lot of chicken in the summer because it's light and easy to fix.
More...Our blueberry bushes are bursting with beautiful berries. I spent the better part of Saturday morning picking blueberries and already have put up several quarts to enjoy later in the year, long after the harvest is over.
More...I talked about my container garden elsewhere in the Sun Herald a few weeks ago and am happy to say that tomato plants are producing, strawberries are growing and blueberries are ripening.
More...A co-worker who was reading about my container garden and the growth of my romaine lettuce offered up a favorite dressing she found in Racheal Ray's first cookbook. Tammy Smith says it's restaurant-quality and while the recipe says it serves four, she says if you are light-handed on the dressings, it will serve 6, so prepare accordingly! Rachael Ray Dressing for "Jackson Salad" 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1/4 tsp Montreal Steak Seasoning by McCormick 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup white b...
More...My blueberry bushes are chock-full of berries that are starting to show a hint of color. That means the season will be upon us in just a few weeks and I'll soon have fresh, sweet blueberries on hand. My husband has an easy recipe for blueberry cobbler that uses a cake mix for the topping, so I found a similar one on Cooks.com that you can use. Many cobbler recipes call for canned blueberry filling, but this one, and my husband's call for fresh blueberries. If you don't have blueberry bush...
More...With a friend in town and an anglophile in the office, I decided to host a "watch the royal wedding" party last week.
More...This time of year, my husband and I are always looking for meatless dishes to prepare on Fridays and one of our favorites is Eggplant Parmesan. We both really like the vegetable (which also is wonderful in ratatouille) but it can get heavy because you bread and fry the eggplant before putting the dish together. Weight Watchers offered a suggestion to lighten up the dish that has worked out beautifully for us without sacrificing any of the flavor, so I thought I'd share it with you today. Th...
More...We're back from a summer hiatus with a tasty treat to offer you from Sunday's Relish magazine. The monthly magazine that is available to Sun Herald readers has some great treats inside, including a pork stew that we'll be trying once the cold weather really sets in. I'm always looking for a sweet treat, even though I try to limit them.
More...Saturday was the Blueberry Jubilee in Poplarville and for the second year, there was a recipe contest to find some of the best jams, jellies and desserts made with the popular berry. Here are the winners, sent to us from the Poplarville Blueberry Council, which sponsored the contest: 1st place dessert By Cameron Tyner Blueberry Yum-Yum 2 cups fresh blueberries ¼ cup water ¼
More...The blueberry bushes in my yard are starting to show a little bit of color now. You know, the good color. Blue. Each day i go out to water the bushes and check the progress of the plump, green berries that are loading down the branches. This looks to be a bumper crop this year and I've been impatiently waiting for the fruit to ripen. It's time.
More...My sister, Laura, is a wonderful cook who is always bringing dishes to family get-togethers that have all of us asking for the recipe. This one has got to be one of my husband's favorites. When I told him I was going to make some and take it to a function at work, he was so crestfallen that I saved a portion for him at home.
More...A new cookbook came to my attention recently and I've enjoyed poring over the pages looking for new dishes to try. Called New Orleans Kitchens, the cookbook combines the best recipes from the Crescent City with some of the best art the city has on display -- including some from here on the Coast. We'll have more on the cookbook in an upcoming edition of the Sun Herald.
More...Don't you just love trying out new recipes? I do. There's something fun and adventurous in assembling ingredients to give a new dish a try. Almost as much fun, though, is coming up with my own new dishes -- like I did last week. Recently, I was making veal Marsala (it's so easy!) and while cooking the mushrooms in the Marsala wine, the aroma was just amazing.
More...My friend and co-worker, Lisa, and I were talking about hors d'oeveurs this week when she sent me a recipe for a wonderful, savory concoction that is, simply, a cheese puff. The recipe (which follows) is much like the recipe for a creme puff or eclair shell, but the added cheese makes it a perfect, light accompaniament to cocktails on a spring or summer afternoon.
More...My husband got an iPhone for Christmas and he's been opening presents in the form of applications ever since. No slouch himself in the cooking department, he loves to find new recipes to try when it's his turn in the kitchen.
More...Living in South Mississippi, we are treated to some of the best seafood in the world. From succulent shrimp to tasty flounder, mahi and other delectables, we could eat seafood every day and never tire for lack of variety. But my Yankee roots show when it comes to crab cakes.
More...It's January and everyone is in New Year's resolution mode, but that's no reason to become a rabbit. A balanced, healthy diet is more likely to stay with you than a diet that deprives you of the occasional treat. Weight Watchers has a wonderful web site that offers tips and tools to help you along the way in your weight loss journey/new healthy lifestyle.
More...This current spate of frigid temperatures reminds me of my childhood and the snow-filled winter days in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Granted, we don't have the snow, but the termperatures sure indicate it could happen!
More...Sorry for the hiatus, folks, but we're back with a bang and something very exciting. For the past week or so, we've been offering a cookie recipe a day newsletter for holiday recipes. The cookie recipes are collected in a database after publication and readers have been encouraged to contribute their own recipes as well.
