The Red Cross at 6 p.m. today will open the Kiln Shelter at 18320 Mississippi 43 in Kiln for families who need shelter from Tropical Storm Lee.
Hancock County officials have issued a "voluntary evacuation" for low-lying areas that are prone to flooding in heavy rain. The area could receive more than 10 inches -- perhaps much more in some areas -- over the next few days from the slow-moving storm.
The South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross will provide volunteers, cots, water andsnacks.
Residents needing shelter will need to bring personal items such as clothing, medicines, personalhygiene items, bedding and toys for children. Cots will be available, but will be given to thedisabled, special needs residents and the elderly, as priority.
