Q: I like the look + color scheme of the TAMKO architectural shingles better than the GAF architectural shingles. Is there any downside to using TAMKO instead of GAF?

A: yes and no. i prefer gaf over tamko. gaf use metric and tamko plan wich are older use the old system

Q: Shouldn't my 3 tab ridge caps match my field shingles? Please advise! I need help on this answer! Thanks, Rick

A: yes rick . you need to use the same shingles as the field

Q: While getting quotes for a new roof, I am getting conflicting information concerning attic ventilation. I know that I need to have a ridge vent added to the house. Question is does the power vent (temp only) interfere with the airflow for the ridge vent or diminish the ridge vent's effectiveness? Would you remove the power vent or leave it on a total re-roof? Many thanks.

Q: We had two holes punctured into our roof from a tree about 1 foot up from the gutter. When correcting what was damaged, is it important to replace the drip edge with ice guard as well?

A: know but in the summer it will suck hot air if place to close to the ridge

Q: i am being offered a GAF timberline 40 in place of the 30 year certainteed i ordered when i signed my roofing contract. is the gaf timeberline 40 a better quality. i am under the impression that certainteed is a better shingle. i think i also like the shadow effect of the certainteed vs. the gaf. your advice please?

A: yes gaf 40 years is better look at the wind rating different to start and ask the difference to go to a 50 years gaf

Q: how do you rate the performance of GAF timberline 30 shingles versus Owens Corning Oakridge Plus dimensional...gaf is 70 mph rated while OC is 110 mph rated

A: you are comparing two diiferent shingles timberline 30 is the same as oak pro 30 from o.c. ,, o.c oak plus is the same as grand timberline

Q: where can I get an non-bias appraisal of hail damage to my roof? My insurance company says there is less damage than told by contracters.

A: the insurer will always said less than your real damage and the contractor wants to make money. you will have to settle for the middle or see and arbitrator,

Q: I have a home on windy ocean/bay, i had 11 metal ridge vents 4' long each recent storm blew one off roof. House is 19 years old.What is best & easiest to install new ridge vents. Is it easy to install ,its a ranch house. thanks joe

A: it is very easy to install ridge vent use cobra by gaf, put the nails in the mark line and use 3" nails cobra III contains the nails with it . And use timbertex by gaf to cover the ridge.

Q: How do I rate the shingles. I haave quotations from 3 contractors and each use a differnet brand. The three brands are GAF, Owens Corning and Tamko. I also now that Cetainteed also makes shingles. Any advice?. Thanks

Q: I am in the process of remodeling my living rm. I ripped up the carpet expecting to find hard wood floors that are present elsewhere in the house but to my surprise found what appears to be linoleum. My question is does linoleum contain asbestos? also the underlayment appears to be a cardboard like subtance, what are the odds of asbestos in this? The house is old so the threat of asbestos is always in the picture, i've had the plaster tested it was negative. Thanks

Q: I am considering purchasing a condominium which has a flat roof sundeck. the owner told me that it is aon. I cannot find any information on that type of roof. Please advise.

A: never heard oof that. maybe epdm or rubber roof but aon???

Q: My roof is 30 year arch. shingles and was installed in 2003. Had hail storm in 3-06 and the ins. company is saying they will replace only parts of the roof as the damage is not great enough for them to replace all of it. Can this be done in sections and will it match the existing?

A: it will take years to match, due to the sun effect and algea on the shingles. put it can be patch one shingles at the time. check your insurance policies carefully.

Q: I am about to replace my asphault shingles. I have a 10/12 roof pitch and the roofer wants to use 20 year shingles. Is there that much difference compared to the 25 year ones, or would the money savings be worth it to stay with the 20 year ones?

A: on a 10/12 roof you should put arch shingle 30 years. i don't recommened 20 years

Q: I presure washed the wood shingle siding on one side of my house, and the color changed from silver to a light wood (prefer). The shingles have also become furry. Have I damged them and if I have how do I fix it. Since I prefer the color can I finish the house using the same process ?

A: the water did that use sand paper to cut the furry
