Q: Which is better on a Florida architectural shingled roof: ridge vents or off-ridge vents? I have a leak on my roof, and I was advised to replace the roof vs repair. however, some roofers suggest ridge vents and others prefer off-ridge vents. Which do you suggest and why? Thanks.

Q: I am planning on having shingles put on my home. The roof I have now is o.k. I guess, it leaks in a couple places but only if it rains real hard. My question is should I get metal shingles or the camelot shingles? Metal is very expensive double the price. The seller says that they are worth it. But I have people tell me why get into debt when the Camelot shingles are plenty good enough. Metal is suppose to be forever. I need help please tell me what you would do. I like the look of the camelot better but I dont know what to do. Both sellers are being very pushy and aggressive and tell me if I do not choose their product I am making a big mistake and will regret it when its too late. Please help! Thank You.

While re-shingling, should we have the roofers put in cobra venting and sofit vents or some other combination, or are gable vents enough providing the finising of the attic is not done to the peak to continue air flow?

Q: What is the appropriate color of gable vents? We are remodeling our house and are adding gable vents (because we lost all our shade trees). The vinyl siding of our house is "dune" (creamy beige) with linen (slightly offwhite) trim and our roof is brown/beige mix. The HOA wants us to put up white gable vents, we want to use a brown or dark burgundy to coordinate with the roof, which we say maintains harmony and archetectural dignity of the gable vents. What do you say?

Q: I got a real bad roof job 15 years ago and now I need it replaced down to the rafters. This time I made a list of everything that I"ll make sure is written in the contract. The one thing I'm concerned about is a new ridge vent. I don't like "Cobra" brands due to the Cobra I have that has failed due to the mesh clogging up. The installer showed me a plastic "Tamko" brand ridge vent that doesn't have the mesh inside but has double sets of slots that won't clog. What do you think?

Q: What is the difference between an Architect roof shingle and a 3 Traditional 3 tab shingle?
Answered 09/12/06 23:20:06 by Patrick Rochon
A: this is the most question ask. first the main reason is the look of the shingles the arch is so much better looking on a roof. the amount of year the shingle is warranties 30 compare to 20 on most case. the wind rating is better by 25 mph , the weigh of the shingles is 80 ibs/sq better.the amount of years the shingles is waranties for algea is also better. and the arch is much easier to put down.Submitted by nancy brown from poplar grove, il.

Q: Hi Patrick, What are the differences in ridge vent styles? I see some manufacturers and installers prefer and specialize in rolled vs. strip, baffled vs. corrugated vents. Thanks.
Answered 09/12/06 22:55:23 by Patrick Rochon
A: you have a two part question. the rol ridge vent is usually thinner so lest air comming out of your atttic. because the good cobra ridge vent by gaf is probably the best in the market right now. for the second part it all go with the look you like in your soffit. baffled is the little grid and corrugated is a continious vent.Submitted by Margaret Shaffer from Stoystown, Pa

Q: I am currently looking to buy a house. My one concern with houses more than 8 years old is the roofing. Typically, after how long does a house's roof need to be replaced or re-shingled?
Answered 08/30/06 00:17:18 by Patrick Rochon
A: it all depens on the quality of the materials and how good is the installer but if you need a good roofer in dallas let me know. but usualla a 3 tab roof last about 18-22 years and a arc roof last around 27-33 years.
