Q: I just started the Depo shot, and i had been on a the patch for about a year and before that i was on a pill. Nothing weird hapen when i switched from the pill to the patch. But i ahd to switch from the patch to the shot because the patch was no longer working for my problems. Recently eveytime i have sex with my boyfriend it hurts on the left side inside, and we have to stop. Then when i go to check myself i notice that im bleeding. Today im spotting. The first time we had sex after i got the shot, afterwards it was burning and bleeding a little. Is this just from the shot? or is something wrong with me, cause this has never happend before i got the shot.

Answered 06/30/08 10:32:20 by Dr. Jones

A: Ashely, The depo provera shot does have many side effects, including irregular bleeding. It also lowers your estrogen level, which may explain the burning after sex. You can try using a lubricant like K-Y jelly before sex, to help the burning. If the irregular bleeding persists, you may be better off back on the patch, or the pill.

Answered 06/30/08 10:30:19 by Dr. Jones

A: jimilie, It sounds like your menstrual cycles are getting more irregular, which is not uncommon in the mid-late thirties. Unfortunately, the depo provera shot will not regulate your menstrual cycles, and in fact will probably make it worse for the first several months. After 4-6 months, your menstrual cycles may stop altogether, but the first several months the bleeding may be daily. If you don't smoke, then birth control pills may be a better choice to regulate your menstrual cycles. If you are finished having children, then an endometrial ablation will make your periods stop altogether. Talk to your doctor more about all your options.

Q: About 3 months ago, I noticed a very small lump I guess you could call it, right on my nipple. It was about the size of a BB. About a week later it started to look more like a spider bite. At the time it was very painful. It formed a little head and so I squeezed it and puss came out, just like a spider bite does. I assumed thats what it was and kept it clean and also put triple antibiotic on it. Now, every 2 weeks or so it comes back. It stays smaller now and doesn't hurt at all. If I squeeze it stuff comes out that's almost like the stuff when you squeeze a zit. Right now I can't afford a doctor at least for a few months when I get my insurance. Do you have any thoughts on what it could be? thank you for your time!

Answered 06/26/08 09:55:20 by Dr. Jones

A: Skylar, Although it is difficult to say without an exam, it sounds like you may have developed a sebaceous cyst. This is a benign cyst that can get filled with dead skin cells and grow bigger over time. When you squeeze it, the stuff that comes out of a sebaceous cyst looks like white cheese, similar to a pimple. It it benign, but usually won't go away for good until the entire cyst, including the cyst wall, is removed. This can usually be done in the office. For now, don't worry, and as soon as you can, see your doctor for an exam to confirm a sebaceous cyst, and talk about an excision.

Q: DR.JONES, I HAVE BEEN READING ALL YOUR LETTERS AND THINK THIS IS A WONDERFUL SERVICE THAT YOU PROVIDE, THANK YOU. MY QUESTION IS... I AM 56 AND HAVN'T HAD A PERIOD IN 4/5 YRS. WENT THROUGH MENOPAUSE WITHOUT HORMONES, DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE THEM THE REST OF MY LIFE. 3 DAYS AGO I STARTED SPOTTING, TODAY IT'S A LITTLE MORE MOSTLY WHEN I WIPE. I HAVE JUST A SMALL UNCOMFORTABLE FEELING BUT NOT FULL CRAMPS. IS THIS SOMTIMES NORMAL??? I KNOW I NEED TO SEE A DR. BUT COULD YOU GIVE ME AN INSIGHT ON THIS. ALSO ARE YOU TAKING NEW PATIENTS? I DO NOT HAVE A REGULAR OBGYN BUT FEEL I WOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH YOU.

Answered 06/25/08 14:28:17 by Dr. Jones

A: Granny, Thank you for your kind words. As you know, you really need to see a doctor to fully evaluate why you're bleeding. However I will tell you that most of the time a little bleeding when wiping is nothing to worry about, and is usually caused by atrophy, or thinning of the vaginal lining due to having no hormones for 4-5 years. But bleeding can also be a sign of a more serious problem. So see your doctor (and yes I am taking new patients) for a full evaluation.

Q: I receive a mammgram yearly. Last year there was some concern with my right breast. The radiologist ordered another mammogram and then an U/S. Why can't physicians just order the U/S? It is much more preferred and extremely less painful. Virtually no pain at all! I have to take Motrin prior to a mammogram. If it is an insurance problem, I would gladly pay the difference!

Answered 06/23/08 09:14:27 by Dr. Jones

A: Painful, Unfortunately, the ultrasound is not good at all at detecting breast cancer. It is helpful in determining if a spot seen on mammogram is a cyst, or solid tumor, but otherwise it is not nearly as good at detecting breast cancer as the mammogram is. There is new information coming out regarding MRI as a screening test for breast cancer, and it seems that MRI will be better, as well as less painful, than a mammogram. It is much more expensive, and insurrance companies have not yet agreed to cover the cost. But maybe in the future we will be able to order MRI instead of mammogram, and have a better test that hurts less.

Q: Dr. Jones I have a history of BAD migraines. I am taking Mircette now. I have had terrible knock me off my feet migraines since I started the Mircette. I need some help I can't continue on with these migraines. Can you please help me?

Answered 06/18/08 14:50:35 by Dr. Jones

A: DLR, birth contol pills are known to worsen migraines. Some pills are worse than others. Mircette is actually one of the better choices, is not as bad as others, and is usually the one I give to patients who have migraines. If your migraines are worse on Mircete, then you need to switch to another form of birth control, one without estrogens (no pills, no patch, no nuvaring). You can try depo provera, although the side effects are not always favorable, or you can try an IUD. Talk to your doctor about your options other than pills.

Q: Hi Dr. Jones. I am a patient of yours. You delivered my son in the end of Feburary via an emergency c-section. Unfortunately my incision became infected due to unrelated bacteria and you refered me to the healing center, Dr Akins, Who are/were great by the way. I had to have oxygen treatments for a month to heal the incision and was discharged on 4/5/08. My scar is still not completely healed and I am told it could take 9 months for it to completely heal. Although I do not plan to have another child soon, one day is a possibility. I am worried, however, about having another c-section. The treatments were such a pain/stressful with a newborn, I dont ever want to go through it again. It was very tramatic to the point that if i cant have a vaginal birth, I'm definately not haveing any more children. So finally my question: I know haveing a vaginal birth after a c-section is possible but given my complications do you think it would ever be possible for me? Also as you know Mason was born with an amniotic band. What are the chances I will have another child with the same problem.

Answered 06/17/08 16:42:12 by Dr. Jones

A: Jaclyn, It'g good to hear from you, and I'm glad your doing well, and almost healed. I do remember the whole ordeal, and was very upset at the wound infection that developed. I can tell you that those infections are unlikely to re-occur in future operations, so that if you did have to have another c-section, it is unlikely that you would have another wound infection. It is possible to have a vaginal delivery after a previous c-section, even with your history. It is difficult to say exactly what the chances are of being successful in trying to deliver vaginally. Overall, the national average is about 60% for success. If you were to try, and for whatever reason did need another c-section, then again the chances of another infection are unlikely. The same goes for amniotic band syndromes. They are usually isolated events, and very rarely reoccur in subsequent pregnancies, so very, very unlikly to have that problem with your next pregnancy. It's great to hear from you. Come by sometime and show off Mason.

Q: Dr.Jones I have had 4 long, complicated births years ago (age 49)& now starting menopause and have a very painful prolapsed uterus, cysts on right ovary for over 2yrs now I also have some breast lumps and discharge form my nipple and rash on nipple and was told by health dept drs that it is hormones and they run tests then when it comes to getting surgery done since I have NO insurance, they seem to just fluff me off and have been living on pain meds to even be able to walk upright, can you suggest what is happening t my body and where can I go get help to get surgery done for my uterus Please? I am extremely tired, have problems even walking from pressure and very worried cause cancer has taken my whole family very early!

Answered 06/16/08 17:36:34 by Dr. Jones

A: Shania, It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what is going on with your body, but you need some help on where to go to get help. For funding, you can apply for medicaid, and if you qualify, your surgery will be covered. If you don't qualify for medicaid, your next best bet is to be referred to Jackson, where they will often do surgery at no charge. Other than that, you can talk to local hospitals about working out a payment plan, but most hospitals want the majority of the money up front, and it can be a very expensive surgery. Good luck!

Q: I'm 6 months pregnant and I just had a pap done. It hurt and the obgyn said that I bled...when I asked her why this would happen she said it could only come from an STD or an STI ..but I highly doubt that could be,i've been with the same person.. I DO have BV..if I've had BV for a long time, untreated..could this make my pap painful?

Answered 06/16/08 17:32:05 by Dr. Jones

A: Wondering, It is not uncommon to have some light bleeding or spotting following an exam, or pap, when you are pregnant. This is most often caused by the increased blood flow to to the cervix and uterus. This will also often cause spotting after intercourse. While an STD also can cause this, it does not mean you have an STD. Hopefully your doctor is checking for STDs, and when the test returns negative, you can relax.

Q: Dr jones, I am 37 years old and I have been suffering with severe cramps and stabbing sensation in my rectal area for the last 7 years when I start my periods. I have been to several doctors for my problem and no one has been able to come up with a solution. In Sept 2005 I had 8 fibroids tumers removed and figured that, that would help with my painful periods and it hasn't. I bleed very heavily, I have large clots, and I cry for no apparent reason when my cycle starts. I hope that you can give me some direction on what I should do or whom I can see to get this problem solved.

Answered 05/29/08 16:15:02 by Dr. Jones

A: Dear S&T, I'm sure there is more to your story than meets the eye, because it seems fairly straightforward to me that if you are having painful, and heavy menstrual cycles, and have not had any success with conservative surgery (removing fibroids), then it is time to move on to a hysterectomy. Having a hysterectomy will pretty much guarantee no more menstrual cycles, and therefore no more clots, and no more cramping pains. You should talk to your doctor about getting definitive treatment. Good Luck.

Q: Dear Dr. Jones, My sister and I both have 2 normal healthy children and since we both have lost our #3 child is this a pattern for sisters??? And about the blood clot, Our grandfather had one, his brother and our great grandmother had one..they both died from it, would you say this is heriditary? and would you think I would be high risk for the next pregnancy? and Thanks for taking care of my sister with Rachie.. ( she is named after me) thanks....

Answered 04/18/08 10:27:38 by Dr. Jones

A: Sis, Both you and your sister have had two healthy children. Both of you having a miscarriage with your third pregnancy is probably a coincidence, and not a pattern. And having grandparents, and great grandparents with blood clots may or may not be heriditary, it is hard to say. You really need to discuss this in person with your physician, to review your history, and your family's history.

Q: I exclusively breastfed for 1 year, I only had 1 cycle after delivering (c-section). Never really had a normal cycle. I only bleed for 1 day and sparingly spot for a couple of days. I have a foul odor during this time and after intercourse. any help.

Answered 04/16/08 11:20:00 by Dr. Jones

A: No name, having irregular cycles after delivery is not necessarily normal. Having a foul odor after intercourse is often a symptom of bacterial vaginosis (BV). This may be related to your irregular bleeding. The best advice I can give you is to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Q: Hello Dr jones. My daughter was delivered by you in June 06. I was your vbac hopeful with a 10pd baby.Needless to say, you did a csection. I still have itching in that area, Is that normal? Thank you for giving me hope in a vbac even thought it probably was not possible. LOL My sister recently lost her baby girl at 19wks gestation due to a blood clot. Is this a disorder that is heriditary? the blood clot was only in the baby's cord and no where else but the placenta was in bad shape. If this is heriditary should I get tested as well for a blood disorder? I had a miscarriage too but mine was at 7wks. Ironically, my sister and I lost both our third child.

Answered 04/16/08 11:18:22 by Dr. Jones

A: Jennifer, Good to hear from you. I hope you are enjoying Japan. Having some itching at the scar is normal, even two years later. It may come and go for several years. Your sister will probably be tested for a blood clotting disorder. If she does test positive for any clotting disorder, then you should be tested too, as it is often hereditary. But, you have had two full term healthy babies, so you don't need to be tested unless your sister is tested, and she turn up with a disorder. Take care.
