Hurricane/tropical storm strike probabilities are issued by the National Weather Service as the storm nears landfall to give the public a realistic idea of where the storm will strike.

The probabilities are defined as the chance in percent that the center of the storm will pass within approximately 65 miles of selected locations.

Each area is about 125 miles wide: 75 mile to the left of the center of the area and 50 miles to the right. This 125-mile area approximates the region of hurricane force winds for a typical hurricane.

Strike probabilities have no relation to hurricane intensity. Probabilities get larger as a storm gets closer to landfall.

Probabilities will be issued four times a day: at 5 and 11 a.m., 5 and 9:30 p.m. in our area.

Coastians should listen for figures issued for New Orleans, Buras, La.; Gulfport and Mobile to estimate the probabilities for areas between these points.
