There are new cranes on the block at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge.
Six Sandhill Cranes were released into a fenced area Wednesday as a first step to releasing into the general population at the refuge.
Members of the Audobon Nature Institute weighed, measured and tagged the birds before releasing them into the fenced area.
Color coded tags are placed on the Sandhill Crane's legs in order to allow for easy indentification. An observer with binoculars can tell by the color strips what year the cranes were born, negating the need to capture the cranes to check their tags.
Their wings also were banded to keep them from fully extanding them for flight while in the fenced area. Once they are ready to be released into the refuge, the band will be removed.
