The next few weeks, we hope, will be among the most joyous in the careers of our high school graduates. We congratulate them on their accomplishment and wish them the best of luck in life.
The apparent suicide of Junior Seau, the former NFL superstar linebacker, has again raised the age-old question:
“Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.” is another of the Harvard professor’s wonderful television series for PBS. This is “must-see TV” and a more than worthy sequel to three previous projects Gates has hosted about how some of us came to be what and who we are.
In a bygone day, the back-to-school advertising would hit newspapers and television around Aug. 1. These days, back-to-school ads begin about as soon as the previous school year’s final bell rings. That’s how short the summer vacation has become.
What to do, what to do, what to do?
These days the focus on “vetting” our elected officials has grossly overlooked a major group that is capable of change that directly impacts your life. That group: local elected officials. Why have we completely overlooked this group?
The state of Mississippi is right to engage in a public conversation about policy changes to reduce teen birth rates. A neglected aspect of teen pregnancy prevention, however, is the importance of parents’ roles in their children’s sex education instruction.

“It is the softest of mornings …,” wrote Mary Oliver in a moving poem. We recite the words this morning on the beach, feeling a mild sea breeze caressing face and arms in pulsating breaths. Shorebirds respond to the gentle moment with silence. The world seems to pause. Clocks may be ticking elsewhere, the poet notes, but not here. The shore experiences temporary peace.
