$200 million for jail, highway coming for Hancock County.

State and federal officials announced Thursday that $200 million in federal funds will be made available for hurricane recovery projects here that will include widening a major road to four lanes and building a new county jail.

At a Bay St. Louis press conference, Gov. Haley Barbour made the announcement along with U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker. Barbour said the money will come through federal Community Development Block Grants to the county. Projects will include those on a county-wide scale as well as in Bay St. Louis and Waveland.

At the top of the list will be construction of a new jail to replace the old jail that was seriously damaged in Hurricane Katrina. In addition, county officials hope to use part of the money to four-lane Highway 604/43 to a spot where the roads split north of Kiln.

Traffic accidents and the death toll have continued to mount on the highway, which is the county's critical north-south evacuation route. "This is a day in Hancock County and on the Gulf Coast worthy to be remembered," Wicker said.
