GULFPORT -- Gulfport Fire Department is investigating a suspicious fire at a house in North Gulfport on Wednesday.

Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said one room of the wood-frame structure at 4700 West Railroad in North Gulfport was in flames when firefighters arrived.

"It is a suspicious fire and we are investigating it as such," Sullivan said.

The home was vacant; homeowners recently had moved out, according to neighbors, Sullivan said.

A passerby saw the smoke and flames and called the fire department.

Sullivan said one room was destroyed and the rest of the house suffered heat and smoke damage.

Five units and 13 firefighters responded to the call.
