WAVELAND -- A house in the 300 block of Nicholson Avenue was destroyed in a Monday night fire.

The house, owned by Dorothy Smith, had been built since Hurricane Katrina to replace a previous home on the same lot that was lost to the storm.

Smith was home at the time but escaped unharmed.

Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Sun Herald will update this story in Thursday's edition.
