PASS CHRISTIAN -- Police said they've recovered more than $45,000 in stolen jewelry and fishing equipment and arrested a woman on a charge of grand larceny.
Ashley Renea Gibson, 29, of Gulfport, was a caregiver, housekeeper and had other jobs at a home in the 500 block of Scenic Drive when the items disappeared over several months, Police Chief Tim Hendricks said Monday.
"We've given a very conservative estimate of the value of items stolen," Hendricks said.
"A $29,000 piece of jewelry bought in New York in the 1970s would be worth two or three times that much today," he said.
The jewelry included diamond earrings, a string of pearls, pendants and many other pieces with a large monetary or sentimental value," Hendricks said.
The woman for whom Gibson worked contacted police about the missing items.
Police arrested Gibson on Friday after most of the items were recovered from pawn shops across Harrison County and from buy-and-sell businesses that have the same reporting requirements as pawn shops.
"What concerns us is there is still other items out there," Hendricks said. "She may have given them away or sold them to people, used a newspaper or gone on the Internet to sell them."
"We want to recover all the property for the owner's sake."
Justice Court Judge Diane Ladner set Gibson's bond at $25,000.
Gibson was released on bond shortly after she was booked at the Harrison County jail Friday night.
"We are still in the early stages of the investigation and want to talk to anyone with information that can help us recover the woman's property," Hendricks said.
