GULFPORT -- Within about 10 hours Wednesday: A man was shot in the face during a drug deal, shots were fired as school buses headed to a bus stop, a man used a gun in an armed robbery and a man implied he had a gun in a different robbery.
The criminal subculture is thriving, said Police Chief Leonard Papania, adding he wishes legislators would return phone calls to let law enforcement have a voice in gun laws and ways to better protect the public.
Papania discussed the latest crimes and related issues in a news conference Thursday.
Wednesday night, one person was wounded in a shooting before midnight in the vicinity of West David Drive during an illegal drug transaction, Papania said. The wounded person was taken to a hospital and police have been able to speak with the victim. West David is in Loren D. Heights subdivision south of Dedeaux Road and off Tandy Drive in Gulfport's Orange Grove area.
