A man who was taken in by a friend when he was down on his luck has been sentenced to prison for molesting the woman’s 7-year-old sister, District Attorney Tony Lawrence said.
A Jackson County jury convicted Darnell Donte Marion, 26, on Aug. 1 for touching a child for lustful purposes.
Circuit Court Judge Kathy Jackson sentenced Marion on Friday to 15 years in prison, and ordered six years to serve day for day, and the remaining nine years on post-release supervision, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
Jackson also fined Marion $1,500 and ordered him to register as a sex offender.
The jury believed that Marion molested the 7year-old girl between January and March of 2013 in a case investigated by the Pascagoula Police Department.
Lawrence said Marion also abused the trust of the woman who had taken him in.
“He repaid her by fondling her sister while she was away,” Lawrence said.
A jury convicted Marion in a two-day trial.
Assistant District Attorney George Huffman, who prosecuted the case with Assistant District Attorney NeShondria Ellerby, said he commends the girl in coming forward to confront her abuser.
“Hopefully, this penalty will help her family close a difficult chapter in their lives.”
