Police are searching for the mother of a baby boy abandoned behind a church this afternoon, officials said.
While doctors tell police the newborn seems to be healthy, the woman could need post-natal medical treatment, Sgt. Phil Hancock said.
She could also face criminal charges, he said.
Mississippi has an infant safe haven law that allows a person to leave a baby up to three days old with an employee at any emergency medical provider, hospital emergency room or a licensed adoption agency.
The baby was found by someone around lunchtime behind Bethel Lutheran Church at 2521 Pass Road. It was in a box that was already behind the church, Hancock said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 392-0641 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898.
