The smell and taste of Christmas greets people arriving at the Slavonian Lodge in East Biloxi this morning.
Volunteers worked all night to make the traditional pusharatas. The pastry resembles doughnut holes but the batter is filled with fruit and pecans and the special glaze was mixed yesterday by the experienced hands of Susie “Nosta” Pitelo, 90.
“We started cooking at 11 last night,” said Faye Misko. She began assembling ingredients even earlier and will work until all 1400 dozen batches are cooked today.
Those who didn't pre-order their pusharatas will have to forego the treat until next year. Misko said they have a two-page waiting list of people who will buy any that aren't picked up by noon today.
