A familiar foe will be on the ice when the Mississippi Surge drops the puck on the 2009-10 season. The team announced its 56-game schedule for the 2009-10 Southern Professional Hockey League season.
The Surge will play its first home game Oct. 24 against the Louisiana IceGators with face off scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The season-opener is Oct. 23 in Lafayette, La., against the IceGators in a home-and-home opening series.
Interstate 10 rival Pensacola Ice Flyers will make their first trip to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Oct. 29.
Other highlights on the schedule include six home games and six road games against the Pensacola Ice Flyers as well as six home and seven road games against the Louisiana IceGators. The team will play 28 home games with 10 on Saturday, nine on Friday, six Thursday night games and three Sundays. Holiday home games will also be played on New Year's day and on Dec 26.
The longest string of road games in the 2009-10 season is a five-game stretch from Thanksgiving day in Huntsville to Dec. 5 Louisiana game.
Twice during the season the Surge will play four straight home games. The first beginning Nov. 12 against the Fayetteville FireAntz and concluding on Nove. 19 against the Knoxville Ice Bears. The next four-game run is from Jan. 30 against the Columbus Cottonmouths and wraps up Feb. 7 against the Knoxville Ice Bears.
