A 2-year-old and 4-year-old were among the four people killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Marrero Sunday morning, officials said.
Shortly after 11 a.m., Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s officers found David Mata, 46, and Kelli Mata, 40, dead from apparent stab wounds in the 4800 block of Brandi Street, Col. John Fortunato said in a news release. They were found in the living room.
At the scene Sunday, however, Sheriff Newell Normand said it was unclear how the father died.
Officers found their children, 2-year-old Liam Mata and 4-year-old Caden Mata, in separate bedrooms in the home. Both children appeared to have suffered a stab wound and were pronounced dead at the scene, Fortunato said.
Kelli Mata’s 18-year-old daughter found the bodies after returning home from a hunting trip, Fortunato said. She fled the home and called 911.
The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide, Fortunato said.
David Mata had a prior for cocaine possession in 2003 and a domestic disturbance against the wife, Kelly, in 2010, according to Fortunato.
Fortunato said the family had only lived at the address in Marrero for six months. Neighbors confirmed that they hadn't lived in the area for long, and that they had kept to themselves.
