Gov. Haley Barbour said Tuesday from Iraq that he’s proud of the job American troops are doing.

More than 3,500 National Guard troops from Mississippi are in Iraq, many from the Tupelo-based 155th Brigade Combat Team.

“I had a chance today to meet with a number of the soldiers from the 155th,” Barbour said. “We’ve come across soldiers from across Mississippi and it’s really inspiring to actually see the work they do.

“We’re very proud of all our men and women in the military.”

Barbour and the governors of Georgia, Oregon and Wyoming are on the trip sponsored by the Department of Defense.

The trip was announced only after the governors arrived Tuesday.

They were briefly in Kuwait before visiting U.S. troops in Iraq, including some from the Mississippi National Guard’s 155th Brigade Combat Team.

More than 3,000 members of the 155th are deployed in Iraq, and it’s the second tour of duty for many in the unit.

Barbour told reporters during a conference call that he can’t reveal where else the governors will go or when they’ll return.

In 2005, Barbour and other governors traveled to Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
