The Salvation Army kicks off its public Christmas season next week with ceremonies in Harrison and Jackson counties to encourage donations via Angel Trees and the traditional red kettles.

Kettle kickoff

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command of the Salvation Army will host its annual Christmas Kettle kickoff at 10 a.m. Nov. 20, at the Wal-Mart at 3911 Bienville Blvd. (U.S. 90) in Ocean Springs, with music performed by the Ocean Springs High School choir.

Angel Tree kickoff

The annual Christmas Angel Tree kickoff will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 23 at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, near Dillard’s on the mall’s south end. The program will be by children from the WINGS Performing Arts program of Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport, Toys for Tots Marines and celebrity angels.

Notables will attend

The Mississippi Surge, the minor-league hockey team that plays on the Coast, is invited to the Biloxi event and elected officials and dignitaries are expected at both.

Sign-up for the Children’s Gift Program that includes Angel Trees and Toys for Tots was held during September and October and ended Nov. 6.

Emergency sign-ups are still possible, said Shawna Tatge, representative for the Gulf Coast Area Command.

Because of the struggling economy, more people are seeking help from the Salvation Army, according to solicitations mailed earlier to Salvation Army supporters.
