Some of Earth’s best works will be on display this weekend as the 19th annual Magnolia State Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show comes to the Civic Center Building, Jackson County Fairgrounds, in Pascagoula. This year’s show, which runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, will feature specimens of recently discovered Mississippi opals, on display on the Coast for the first time.
John Wright, show chairman, said Mississippi has an abundance of semi-precious gemstones, such as jasper, carnelian, agate and quartz, as well as petrified wood and other fossils, but the Mississippi opal is its first precious gemstone.
Also appearing at the show will be a modern-day gold prospector. Bill LaRue of Ocean Springs spent years mining gold out West, as well as in Canada, Alaska and Mexico. Some of his finds, and the jewelry he’s made from them, will be on display.
Rockhounds will also find scientific and educational exhibits at the show — such rarities as meteorites, fossils and unusual mineral specimens, and a black-light display.
Members of gem and mineral societies will be available to demonstrate techniques used in the lapidary arts and crafts to those interested in the how-to of creating art from stone. There also will be jewelry, rock art and other lapidary creations to buy, for those seeking a perfect gift from nature.
