PASS CHRISTIAN — A wheelchair-bound man awaited surgery to amputate an arm Thursday due to injuries sustained after he was hit by a car on Second Street.

Pass Christian resident Jim Sprinkle, 64, was placed under intensive care at Memorial Hospital after the incident around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday.

A family member said Sprinkle has been in a wheelchair for 10 years after suffering a stroke and he travels the area daily. He lives on the south side of Second Street and was returning home from Wal-Mart with his service dog at his side.

He was travelling west and was struck from behind by a westbound car.

“He always travels on the side of the road,” said his son, David Sprinkle.

His injuries include a hematoma in the brain, the son said.

Police reported the motorist said she didn’t see him. Police said it happened in an unlit area after the motorist was diverted to Second Street from Long Beach for cleanup from a road spill on Beatline Road.

Police Chief John Dubuisson said the driver’s name is not being released “due to the circumstances. It’s an accident and it’s still under investigation.”
