OCEAN SPRINGS — Ocean Springs police arrested Sean Bradford Mitchell, 41, on a charge of bank robbery within seconds of his leaving the Merchants & Marine Bank on U.S. 90 on Thursday morning.

Witnesses to the robbery pointed out Mitchell to police, who were in the vicinity of the bank when the report of the robbery came in at 11:35 a.m.

Mitchell was leaving the bank on foot with cash, but only made a few hundred yards before he was arrested, said Ocean Springs Det. John Flowers.

“He barely made it off the bank property,” Flowers said. “The police were on him very quickly.”

Mitchell has no known ties to the Ocean Springs community and his last known address was in Athens, Ohio, Flowers said.

The FBI has joined the investigation because they believe Mitchell may have been involved in other robberies. Bank officials reported that a man entered the bank, displayed a small-caliber handgun and demanded money.

He exited through the front of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and was headed toward U.S. 90 when police caught him. The bank is in the 2800 block of U.S. 90, known as Bienville Boulevard in Ocean Springs.

“He was in custody within seconds of the call,” Flowers said. “No one was injured, including the suspect.”

The money was seized as evidence and Mitchell was in the city jail Thursday night awaiting an initial appearance in city court today on a charge of armed robbery.

“Assistance from the public and a quick response by the Ocean Springs police is why he’s in custody,” Flowers said.
