About 200 volunteers participated in the United Way of South Mississippi’s Leo W. Seal Jr. Day of Caring Wednesday in Hancock and Harrison counties, handling everything from moving furniture to registering families for Christmas help.
Good weather likely helped turnout, said Hannah Bell, director of marketing and resource development for UWSM.
“I think the reason the volunteers like Day of Caring so much is they get their hands dirty,” Bell said. “They get to work on a project that makes an immediate and visible change in the community and I think that’s really satisfying for the volunteers.”
The Day of Caring was renamed this year after the late Leo Seal, a local business leader known for his generosity. There were Moore Community House projects on Nichols Street and Davis Street in East Biloxi, as well as Habitat for Humanity home construction projects in Biloxi and Bay St. Louis. Volunteers helped a senior citizen with home repair in Orange Grove, among many other jobs, which were carried out between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 20 job sites.
Bell said similar work days are held throughout the year. One is planned for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there will be an annual Day of Action in June.
