BILOXI — Today, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Southeast Mississippi chapters of the American Red Cross will kick off the largest “Heroes” campaign in this region’s history.

“Heroes” is a grassroots fundraising campaign by American Red Cross chapters across the country in which local business people, school groups, church groups, civic clubs and individuals pledge to raise $1,000 each, through any creative means they choose.

“This is a record-breaking year for us. We will have participation from nearly 80 volunteers, from five different counties. We will also have a spectacular range of events and activities that will be happening throughout the month of November,” said Bill Brent, executive director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter.

This year the chapters have set a joint goal of $80,000 for the campaign. The money will be used to support Red Cross services such as disaster relief like assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid, and CPR training and disaster-preparedness education. All money raised will be used locally.

This year’s events include a pie-baking competition, a bachelor auction and bowling tournament.
