Burkhalter steps in as acting U.S. attorney

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald R. Burkhalter, who has worked for more than 20 years in the Jackson office, has been named the latest acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District.

No announcement has been made from Washington on the president’s selection of a permanent appointee. Burkhalter replaces acting U.S. Attorney Stan Harris, who left for military duty in Iraq.

Burkhalter served in the U.S. Justice Department in Washington for more than 10 years before moving to Mississippi’s Southern District U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In Washington, his duties included work for the Office of Professional Responsibility, the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys Evaluation and Review Staff, the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees, the Eastern District of Virginia and the Southern District of Florida.

In the United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, he has served as financial fraud coordinator, health care fraud coordinator, international and national security coordinator, executive assistant U.S. attorney, and first assistant U.S. attorney.

Burkhalter is the third of the last five U.S. attorneys who are natives of Pike County, having been preceded by Brad Pigott of McComb and Dunn Lampton of Osyka.
