Jazz for enjoyment and education hits the stage at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jackson County campus of MGCCC in Gautier.

It will be performed by a faculty combo called The Bouquets, made up of Joely Corban, an art instructor, and Daniel Driskell, piano and music appreciation teacher.

Chase Rockwell, a student, will sit in with them.

Calling jazz “the only 100 percent pure American art form,” Corban said, “We are a jazz duo that have come together to inspire and educate people through jazz music.”

She quotes jazz drummer and band leader Art Blakey (1919-1990) saying, “No America, no jazz,” when he debunked efforts by people to connect it to various other countries.

Jazz has spawned a variety of sub-genres since its inception in the early 20th century, Corban said, and lists 80 years of variations starting with New Orleans Dixieland in the early 1910s to acid jazz in the late 1980s, which blended jazz influences into funk and hip-hop.

And The Bouquets try to play some of all of it.

“When we play educational recitals,” she said, “we enjoy inviting students to jam with us — granted they know the tune.”

The Bouquets’ one-hour recital is free for both students and the general public.
